Sustainable Efforts

Premier Members CU is YOUR eco-conscious credit union. We believe environmentally-friendly and sustainable business practices are extremely important, and this is another way your local credit union is doing everything possible to support your community.

Our Efforts include:

  • 100% of our marketing materials are printed on uncoated, 30% post-consumer recycled paper with soy or corn-based inks.
  • We use 100% recycled-content copy paper at all of our locations, and employ responsible purchasing practices for all other office equipment and supplies.
  • We incorporate sustainable building features such as Solar Panels at our main branch location.
  • We recycle at all of our locations and compost at our main branch location via our partnership with Eco-Cycle.
  • We use compact fluorescent lighting (energy-efficient bulbs) at all of our locations.
  • We sponsor local tree plantings via programs we sponsor through Boulder Valley School District.
  • We partner with eco-friendly organizations to assist their organizations with reaching their eco-friendly goals.
  • When operating as Premier Members CU, the Credit Union became the FIRST financial institution in all of Boulder County to receive eco-conscious certification from Partners For A Clean Environment. PACE is the official environmental division of Boulder County.
  • Premier Members CU went through an intensive review of our organizational eco-efforts and eco-offerings in order to receive the certification and qualify the Credit Union as full-fledged eco-conscious institution.
  • Premier Members CU was awarded the CleanTech Silver Medal of Honor for Business Sustainability at the 2008 Sustainable Opportunities Summit held in Denver, Colorado.

Sustainable Offerings

What does being eco-friendly mean?
For us at Premier Members CU, it's a commitment to our community and sharing an amazing future together. It's a way for us to set the example for other financial institutions in the markets we serve. In addition to practicing what we preach and providing support to other eco-friendly and sustainable organizations, we also provide eco-friendly offerings to our members.

It's all part of being one of the forerunners in the eco-friendly movement and practicing responsibility within our environment.

Solar Monitoring

In June 2007, Premier Members CU installed a 10-kilowatt Sun Power solar electric system on the roof of our Main Branch at 55th and Arapahoe in Boulder (previously a Boulder Valley CU location). The solar electric system produces clean, emission-free solar electricity, thereby offsetting 14 tons of CO2 pollution each year for the 30-40 year life of the system. This is equivalent to planting 1,078 total trees or equivalent to reducing 30,500 auto traveling miles per year.

Below is an online, real-time update of how much power and energy our solar panels are generating and saving our environment:

Lifestyle Changes

Reduce Waste

  • Free Online BillPay
Use free Online BillPay from Premier Members CU and save paper, time, and postage!

  • Electronic statements
Sign up to receive electronic statements. For every 134 members receiving e-statements, one tree is saved each year. The signup link is available on the bottom left within Internet Banking.

Shopping

  • Hit the local farmers markets
Reduce the impact of product transportation and support local farmers as well as artisans by shopping at local farmers markets, such as the Boulder County Farmers' Market in downtown Boulder.

  • Electronic statements
Sign up to receive electronic statements. For every 134 members receiving e-statements, one tree is saved each year. The signup link is available on the bottom left within Internet Banking.

  • Is your wood furniture certified?
Choose furniture made from wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Doing so ensures the timber that was harvested was done so in a land-friendly and habitat-friendly way.

Clean Green

  • Forget the pesticides
Plant mint around your home to repel flies, or plant basil to repel both flies and mosquitoes.

  • Freshen the air
Avoid using commercial air fresheners and instead choose to ventilate your home by opening windows or doors, or even boiling cinnamon and cloves for a refreshing and more natural aroma.

Cleaning

  • Glass Cleaning
To clean glass, mix two tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice with three cups of water in a spray bottle.

  • Unclog a drain
Pour one-half cup baking soda down the drain, then add one-half cup white vinegar and cover. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain to flush it. Do not use this method after any commercial drain opener has been used or is still present in the standing water!

Go Green at Home

Building Green

  • Never wait to insulate!
Add insulation to lower energy bills during the hottest and coldest times of the year. Common types include fiberglass, cellulose, rigid foam board and spray foam.

  • Seal your ducts
You can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent when you seal your ducts, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Energy

  • CFL light bulbs
Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, which use 25 percent of the normal light bulb wattage, last up to 10 times longer and save you $30 or more in electricity costs over each bulb's lifetime, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Unplug it!
Unplug electronic products when not being used. In the average home, 40 percent of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Landscaping and gardening

  • Native plants
When you plant flowers and shrubs that are well-suited to the Colorado climate, you'll end up using less fertilizer and pesticides.

  • Reuse grass clippings
Leave your grass clippings on the lawn. Since these clippings release nitrogen, you'll avoid the cost and environmental impact of fertilizer.

Water

  • WaterSense toilets
Today's average toilet accounts for one-third of home water consumption, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA's WaterSense label certifies high-efficiency toilets that could reduce water bills by about 10 percent.

A Sustainable Community

  • Clean Up the Neighborhood
Get your friends, family and neighbors together on a bright and sunny day and pick up litter, haul away garbage and plant trees or flowers near where you live.

  • Support Community Supported Agriculture
Purchase a share in a CSA to secure a portion of a local farm's produce for each week throughout the growing season.

Recycling Information

  • Buy recycled packaging
Strengthen the market for recycled products! Purchase items contained in packaging that is or can be recycled, as well as products made from recycled materials.

  • Consign furniture
If you have furniture that's in great condition, consider sending it to a local consignment store. Another person can put it to good use, and you could even make some money on the deal.
